Crypto Mining: The Backbone of Cryptocurrencies

Updated: Jul 4

Crypto mining is the process that secures and maintains the blockchain. It is far from just creating currency, because it also maintains security mechanisms that prevent fraud without the need for a bank. Crypto mining involves high performance computers that solve mathematical puzzles. These puzzles are extremely hard and require a lot of power, but it keeps the blockchain safe and allows better computing machines onto the blockchain. If the mining device were to win a spot on the blockchain, it gets rewarded by receiving transaction fees running through their specific chain.

Benefits of mining for cryptocurrency

There are many benefits of the process of mining cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, and security is a huge reason many people feel safe holding digital currencies in their portfolio. Mining crypto requires a mass amount of energy and hardware, making it extremely difficult to bypass the network to alter transactions and attack the network. Transactions are also irreversible, meaning that traces to different accounts cannot be found while backtracking a crypto transaction. This makes customers feel safe, and gives them privacy when trading currencies on the market. A big reason that differs mining to other traditional practices of creating currencies is its algorithm. The computers that mine crypto must follow algorithms that are predictable and give the users a good reading on how much outflow happens on a certain cryptocurrency.

Pros of mining cryptocurrencies

Although we just talked about how expensive the computers were to provide enough power for mining crypto, it provides a great passive income for miners. Instead of hidden bank transactions, the miners take a very small fee that does not affect what you see when moving crypto from one account to the other. Miners are also safe from malicious attacks, because the network they work on has a higher computing capability than any average computer.

Environmental Impact

While crypto mining is often criticized for its high energy consumption, there are many ways that show positive environmental change. When mining, miners choose the cheapest electricity, meaning they tend to use renewable energy sources like solar power or hydroelectricity. Hydroelectricity is using water to power the machine, as well as save power by offering natural cooling to the computers. Also, operations use methane gas from oil fields. Methane is a powerful, harmful gas that goes into our atmosphere, but mining fields use it for their operations instead of having it take up our clean air. Having these alternates for high energy consumption makes crypto mining more ethical than other practices of creating currencies.
